Janice's at the Saltbox

Andra's Philosophy

My philosophy is quite simple - to make my clients happy. Everyone has their own taste and style, and I strive to enhance their décor while maintaining the integrity and character of their home. I create a comfortable and elegant environment by balancing classic colors, textures and lighting and maximizing the use of space.

I provide the best antique reproduction furniture, oriental rugs and hand-made period lighting, beautiful lamps, paintings and fabulous accessories – all that will last a lifetime. Draperies and valances, decorative pillows and bedding are custom made to give each client’s home a special touch.

History

Janice’s at the Saltbox is a family owned business in the heart of Lexington, Kentucky’s Chevy Chase historic shopping district. Janice Langston and her daughter, Andra Gyor, are co-owners of the unique interior design and authentic antique reproduction lighting business.

Janice and her husband, Don, started Janice’s Interiors as a part-time business in 1979 selling fine furniture and unique accessories at discounted prices. She was able to get started in the business through her friends in the furniture industry in North Carolina where she was born and raised.

In the early years Don was a project manager at IBM. On his vacation days, he made monthly trips to North Carolina with a van and trailer to pick up furniture. He was responsible for receiving merchandise, making deliveries to customers and window treatment installations.

Andra was a budget administrator at GTE of Kentucky. She started doing the bookkeeping in the evenings for Janice’s Interior’s in 1981. She resigned from GTE to work full time with her mother in 1986 and began designing for clients and builders.

In April 1986 Janice and Andra moved Janice’s Interiors into its current location, The Saltbox, which was an established lighting business. It was a perfect blend – Janice’s Interiors' beautiful interiors and the Saltbox’s handmade period lighting. When the owners of The Saltbox decided to sell the property and business later that same year, Don and Janice immediately bought it and started the renovation process to add an additional 4,000 square feet of floor space and a second level town home for themselves.
